Get Out There and Hike!

roadpoppies800.jpgNow that we’re getting into spring and summer in Phoenix, a lot of us are looking for fun things to do outside, both in the Valley and out of town. One of the best things to do this time of year is hike. Given all of the rain and snow the state saw this winter, there is an abundance of wildflowers all over the Grand Canyon state. You can even see them in some people’s yards, so you know that they’ll be in their glory in the wild.

Some of the best wildflower hikes in the greater Phoenix metro area include Peralta Trail and Pinnacle Peak. Both of these hikes are short and steep, so be prepared to put in some work. But the payoff will be the sweet smells of flowers and the amazing pictures you’ll have from your journey.

Peralta Trail is located in the Superstition Mountains in Gold Canyon, past Apache Junction. Although this is a 90-minute drive from the Northern Valley, you will definitely agree that the trek out there is well worth it. You’ll meander roughly 2.25 miles up 1,366 feet to the end of the trail and vista of Weaver’s Needle. There you can eat a snack and soak in the view, or go a little farther out to the needle before returning back down to the parking lot. Dogs are welcome on leash, and you won’t pay any fees to park.

Pinnacle Peak is located in North Scottsdale, off Alma School near the Four Seasons. Like Peralta, this is an out-and-back trail that goes 1.75 miles each way with a 1,300-foot elevation change. The difference with this hike is that it’s much less straight up and a little more up and down. There are a number of areas to stop and take in the view, and since Pinnacle overlooks many luxury homes in Troon, the view is a spectacular one. Dogs are not allowed on this trail, parking is free, and there are helpful rangers stationed at the trailhead to answer any questions you may have. Afterward, be sure to check out Greasewood Flats or Pinnacle Peak Patio, two Arizona landmarks, for your post-hike refreshments.

If cooler weather is more your speed, there are hikes aplenty in Northern Arizona. Sedona, Pinetop, Prescott, and Flagstaff. Try along the creeks to find the best showings of wildflowers.

Regardless of where your hikes take you this spring, be sure to get out there and hike! You may explore areas of the state you never knew existed, and you can grab your partner, kids, dog, and friends for a great, fun experience!
